WOMEN IN MEDICINE SUBCOMMITTEE The American College of Physicians recognizes and respects women for their contributions to internal medicine and primary care, as well as their subspecialties. The Maryland Chapter acknowledges and appreciates the substantial differences in the needs of female physicians and their dual role, as healthcare specialists and family caretakers during all phases of their career: medical school, residency, fellowship, professional practice, and retirement. With that in mind, the Women in Medicine Subcommittee was organized in December of 2004 to address the many and varied needs of female medical students and physicians within Maryland. Nationally, women now account for 21% of overall College membership and 35% of Associate membership. Over 50% of medical students, 40% of residents and almost 30% of practicing physicians are women. This number is continuing to increase. We need continued growth in organized and academic medicine, particularly in key leadership positions in order to "change the face of medicine" to one that is more aligned with our dual role as physicians and primary caretakers of our families. Our mission is ... 1. to provide a forum for networking and mentoring amongst female physicians and medical students during all phases of their training and career. 2. to increase the number of female physicians in leadership positions. 3. to explore professional options to sustain and nurture the balance of professional and personal responsibilities. 4. to increase membership and participation in organized medicine. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS 1. ACP Evergreen Award*** for 2006 for "Part-Time and General Contract Negotiation for Women" 2. ACP Evergreen Award*** for 2007 for "September is Women in Medicine Month - Annual Conference" ***Evergreen Awards are given to Chapters that have created new programs which strengthens the chapter and increases member communication and involvement |
